Report: Biofuels on the Dutch market - ranking oil companies in the Netherlands

Under the Dutch biofuels obligation, fuel suppliers are required to include a minimum share of biofuels in their overall sales of road transport fuels: 4.25% in 2011 and 5% in 2012. From 2011 onwards they have also had to submit an annual report detailing the biofuels they sell on the Dutch market. The data from these various sources are then compiled by the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa), which publishes a selection of the results.

BirdLife Europe, Transport & Environment, the European Environmental Bureau and the Dutch NGO Natuur & Milieu commissioned a study to assess these data by comparing the environmental performance of the biofuels sold by the various fuel suppliers and rank them based on the average greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of their biofuel blends in 2011. The aim was to identify differences in the companies’ performance and raise awareness amongst consumers. It should be noted that the study is limited to the environmental performance of biofuels. There is currently no reporting in place for fossil transport fuels, which still account for about 97% of total fuel sales.
