London Mayor tells Commission ‘we need to move quicker’ in implementing life-saving ‘direct vision’ in trucks
In this letter to EU Industry Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan welcomes her proposal to define a direct vision standard – the area surrounding a truck cab that the driver must be able to see without using mirrors or cameras – but says “we need to move quicker” on its implementation.
Khan says all new truck models should have to meet the direct vision standard by 2024, and all new trucks sold should comply by 2026. He also wants the European Commission to take back control of the direct vision standard’s implementation from the UN standard-setting body, the UNECE, if it fails to act fast.
