Called ‘Eco-TransIT World’, it allows users to enter any number of starting points, destinations and interim stops to work out the carbon footprint of a journey by rail, road, water and air. If used extensively by freight shippers, it should work out the best transport both economically and environmentally. The system can be tried out at www.ecotransit.org.

German rail company DB and the International rail union UIC have launched a web application aimed at working out the environmental impact of a freight transport journey anywhere in the world.
