MEPs have called for car makers to be set long-term targets for CO2 emissions now and not in a later round of consultations.

In its first debate on the Commission’s proposals to set a binding average of 130 g/km by 2012, the European Parliament’s environment committee said targets set now should run until at least 2020 – this differs from the Commission’s decision not to set a target beyond 2012. MEPs suggested in a resolution last October that the target for 2020 should be 95 g/km and 70 g/km by 2025. T&E believes the targets can be even stricter.
