Shipping E-fuels Observatory
T&E’s shipping e-fuels observatory maps existing, confirmed, and planned green hydrogen and e-fuels production sites that could target the maritime sector.
Overview of the projects
We counted 14 e-fuels projects, 11 of which intend to produce a total of 7.71 Mtoe if we include projects that have not indicated an operational date, or 6.28 Mtoe by 2031 if we consider projects with an operational date. Out of the projects that indicated an operational date, 68% of the volumes are expected to originate from one project: the Australian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH), which intends to serve shipping among other industries.
E-fuels leading the way
While we have not come across a project targeting primarily the maritime sector, seven e-fuels projects consider shipping as an offtaker among the aviation sector, the chemical sector, or other non-specified industries. While some projects intend to develop e-ammonia, this may also be justified by a perceived export potential in Japan and South Korea (e.g. use of green ammonia co-firing in coal power plants). While T&E has come across e-methane projects in Australia, none of them consider the maritime sector as a potential offtaker, and were thus not included the Observatory.
