State of European Transport 2025

Energy

Europe is still heavily reliant on fossil fuels, but electric vehicles are on the charge. Powering our transport with home-grown electricity means less money spent on importing oil.

  • Share of electricity in EU transport (2024) 1.8%
  • Share of biofuels in EU transport (2024) 5.1%
  • Share of fossil fuels in EU transport (2024), leading to a €250 bn bill for imported crude oil 93.2%

The growth in electric vehicles means Europe has probably passed the high-water mark for fossil fuels in transport.

The EU’s biofuels policy has been a disaster leading to the massive uptake of deforestation-driving palm and soy. However, the use of the worst biofuels feedstocks is decreasing.
