Sofía joined T&E in February 2025 as a data analysis intern in the cars team and is now a research analyst focusing on cars and charging. She has worked on topics ranging from real-world emissions of plug-in hybrids and EU charging infrastructure to vehicle safety standards, while tracking the pace of carmaker and country-level electrification.

She studied biophysics in Berlin, where volunteering sparked her interest in climate issues, and wrote her thesis on ecological modelling at an environmental research institute. A native German and Spanish speaker, Sofía also speaks English and French. Outside of work, she likes playing the cello, doing improvisational theatre and philosophy.

Carspreading is taking over our cities. Cars are getting bigger — about 1cm wider every two years. The thing is, our streets aren’t. More than half of new cars in Europe are too wide for urban parking spaces, leaving our cities crowded and congested. And carspreading is damaging our planet too - petrol and diesel SUVs burn around 20% more fuel, and electric SUVs require more resources and critical battery minerals.
