Five new organisations were admitted to the T&E family at this year’s annual meeting, taking T&E’s membership up to 49 organisations (41 members and 8 supporters) based in 26 countries. All five new organisations have English-language versions of their websites.

2Celsius (Romania) A new organisation founded in 2010, 2Celsius operates at two levels: a national level dealing with environmental research and advocacy, and a transnational level to fight global warming and promote a greener economy in central and eastern Europe. It also works for the democratisation of eastern Europe. 2Celsius’s national and international work connects around 10 young environmental journalists and activists from eastern and central Europe who contribute to a media platform and support 2Celsius’s environmental outreach.

Sustainable Development Foundation (Italy) A non-profit think tank based in Rome, the Sustainable Development Foundation was set up in 2008 by a coalition of companies, business associations and sustainability experts keen to encourage the transition towards a green economy. The Foundation relies on a network of 100 associated green companies and more than 50 top-level experts and young talents in the sustainable development field. It aims to be a ‘reference organisation’ for companies, business organisations and ministries wanting information topics such as climate change, renewable energy, resource efficiency, sustainability strategies and reporting, and sustainable mobility. It is chaired by Edo Ronchi, the former Italian environment minister who signed the Kyoto Protocol for Italy in 1997.

National Ecological Centre of Ukraine(Ukraine) A non-profit organisation created in 1991 after Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union, NECU brings together individuals for common action to protect the environment. Its philosophy is to bring environmental considerations to the core of all decision-making, for example by making politicians aware of how they can reduce environmental impact and change policy in the energy and transport sectors. It is currently working in six main areas: biodiversity, energy, climate change, transport, multilateral development banks, and regional policy in Central Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. NECU’s members include scientists, journalists, artists, students and other contributors to environmental protection. It has branches in a dozen of Ukrainian cities.

Russian Social Ecological Union(Russia) Established in 1991, the Russian Social Ecological Union (RSEU) is a non-governmental non-profit membership democratic organisation that brings together public organisations and active citizens from all regions of Russia. All RSEU activities – projects and programmes, actions and campaigns – are aimed at ensuring nature conservation, protection of health and the well-being of people in Russia and around the world. It also emphasises environmental education and promotes environmentally aware approaches to urban planning and business. RSEU also acts as Friends of the Earth in Russia.

European Union against Aircraft Nuisances(Belgium) An umbrella organisation representing residents whose lives are plagued by aircraft noise, the UECNA was founded in 1968 by a Frenchman, a Swiss and a German who each suffered from noise from planes. It describes itself as the sole umbrella organisation representing sufferers from aircraft noise and emissions in Europe, and it has 21 member organisations from nine countries, as well as regional groups and individual residents. It says the impact of aviation noise and emissions on human health is now clear, so the battle is now to tackle the causes.
