  • Letter to Hedegaard: EU should take the lead to cut GHG emissions from shipping

The EU should pave the way for a global action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. In a letter to Konnie Hedegaard, Commissioner for Climate Change, T&E and other 15 environmental NGOs call on the European Union to work for a market-based measure which would set clear and stringent targets in terms of reducing CO2 emissions from all ships independently from their flagging State.

The measure should be based on the polluter-pays-principle and should envisage the implementation of speed limits for ships. The proposal, which the environmental organisations would like to see adopted by 2012, would serve as an example for the IMO on how to move forward in cleaning up shipping.
