• A cry from Greece

The Greek Green MEP Michail Tremopoulos has written to all MEPs calling on them not to let transport sustainability in Greece become a casualty of the country’s financial rescue package.

[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]Tremopoulos says the deal agreed between the Greek government, the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank and the Commission requires all unprofitable railway lines to be closed, which he says means in effect that more than half the Greek rail network will be shut down. Yet using private cars has become very expensive as household incomes have shrunk. ‘The Greek railways are dying for political rather than economic reasons,’ he says in his letter, adding ‘The railway is the backbone of a country – if broken, everything gets paralysed, including any prospect for sustainability in transport.’
