  • ‘No’ to second tunnel

Voters in central Switzerland have rejected a proposal for a second road tunnel through the Gotthard mountain.

[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]Last month’s vote in the canton of Uri reaffirms the Swiss national policy set in a nationwide vote in 1994, which is to favour rail over road. Although only a regional vote, it has national implications, especially as there are powerful national and local interests supporting a second Gotthard road tunnel. The national government is spending €15 billion on new railway tunnels through the Alps to encourage a shift from road to rail, so campaigners opposing a second road tunnel stressed that a second tunnel would compete with the new rail tunnels.
