Ship Pilot

Wednesday, September 19, 2007
Germany’s Environment Protection Agency has published a study on reducing shipping emissions in the Baltic Sea.

“Market-Based Instruments for Abatement of Emissions from Shipping” has been led by the Swedish transport economist and former T&E president Per Kågeson. It proposes a pilot scheme for the Baltic, which would include setting up a common authority for all Baltic states that would collect a mandatory charge reflecting a ship’s NOx emissions in Baltic waters, and also a SOx charge for any ship using fuel with a sulphur content of 0.5% or more.
