Cities call for clean vans

Vans are the fastest growing road transport sector in the EU and a rising source of air and climate pollution, especially in urban areas. Yet, they benefit from less stringent CO2 targets than cars.

T&E along with a number of major European cities including Paris, Lisbon and Amsterdam, have written to the European Commission asking it to prioritise zero-emission vans in the upcoming revisions of the CO₂ standards Regulation and the Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Directive (AFID).

Carspreading is taking over our cities. Cars are getting bigger — about 1cm wider every two years. The thing is, our streets aren’t. More than half of new cars in Europe are too wide for urban parking spaces, leaving our cities crowded and congested. And carspreading is damaging our planet too - petrol and diesel SUVs burn around 20% more fuel, and electric SUVs require more resources and critical battery minerals.
