Geert joined T&E in 2019 after a decade in advocacy roles in Brussels for organisations representing civil society and industry. Geert focuses on ‘grids’ broadly defined. In particular, he leads T&E’s work to ensure that smart charging and Vehicle-to-Grid by electric vehicles help to accelerate the decarbonisation of the electricity grid. His advocacy also focuses on ensuring that grid operators take into account rapidly growing numbers of electric vehicles. In previous positions, Geert worked on a host of environmental and energy dossiers, ranging from hydrogen and e-fuels for aviation and shipping, heating decarbonisation to a campaign to ban fracking for shale gas.
Geert hails from Belgium, but also has Canadian citizenship. He holds a law degree from the University of Ghent, a masters in European studies from KU Leuven and a PhD in political science from the University of Alberta. He speaks Dutch, English, French and some German. On the weekend, you can find him cruising his race bike up and down the hills around Brussels, in the fine company of the Brussels-based cycling group GS Fartlek.
