A green fiscal system for cars is a key policy tool to drive demand for EVs and get polluting SUVs off our roads faster. In April, we published the 2025 version of our Good Tax Guide, a reference tool which compares car taxation across Europe. To mark this third edition, T&E hosted a webinar for policymakers and stakeholders on the 14th of May.
The Guide looks at all taxes paid by new passenger cars in 31 countries (EU 27, the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland) as of April 2025. Based on the relevant specifications of the vehicle – price, CO2 emissions, weight, air pollutants etc. – we calculate the tax paid in each country. This allows us to find out which countries have the greenest tax systems.
The webinar kicked off with interventions by Stef Cornelis, director of the electric fleets programme at T&E, and Arnau Oliver Antich, senior analyst at T&E, who presented the guide's main findings before the four car tax experts below discussed the do’s and don’ts on car tax.
