How much accessible CO2 is there for producing e-fuels sustainably?

T&E and InnoEnergy organised a joint event to discuss whether Europe’s future CO₂ infrastructure will meet the needs of e-fuel production.

E-fuels will be important for decarbonising aviation and shipping but their production requires both green hydrogen and sustainable CO₂. The challenge is increasingly not only the availability of sustainable CO₂, but ensuring it can be sourced, transported and accessed through viable supply chains.

This will become more pressing under the RFNBO Delegated Acts, as fossil CO₂ is phased out and, from 2041 e-fuel producers will need to rely on sustainable biogenic CO₂ or direct air capture (DAC).

With the upcoming EU CO₂ Markets and Infrastructure legislation in Autumn, now is the time to ensure infrastructure planning also reflects the needs of CO₂ utilisation. The event explores how the future framework can account for different CO₂ sources and support transport options beyond pipelines.
