• ReFuelEU: T&E’s recommendations for the 9th December TTE Council

These recommendations answer the two main questions that the Slovenian presidency has set for the policy debate between the EU27 Transport ministers: nature of SAF feedstocks and mandate levels.

The Commission’s original ReFuelEU proposal back in July went some way towards selecting the right types of sustainable aviation fuels: advanced or synthetic. But now the Slovenian presidency’s latest compromise would change the definition of SAFs. It would include problematic feedstocks some of which have a higher emission profile than fossil fuels and may generate negative impacts on biodiversity and local communities. More ambition is needed for e-kerosene, which is the only fuel type that can be sustainably scaled up to meet the fuel demands of the sector, instead of encouraging the production of unsustainable biofuels.
