MEPs have supported a resolution that ‘strongly recommends’ 30 km/h speed limits in all residential areas.
[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]The resolution has been heavily promoted by the European Cyclists’ Federation, and is part of measures to halve Europe’s 31.000 road deaths per year by 2020. The European Transport Safety Council says the chances of a pedestrian surviving a collision with a vehicle travelling at 30 km/h is 95% but only 45% at 50 km/h, while research from the Netherlands says injuries fall by 25% when 50 km/h zones are redesigned for 30 km/h. MEPs have also asked the Commission to draft a proposal and timetable to fit vehicles with ‘Intelligent Speed Assistance’, a device that can force drivers to stick to speed limits.
