  • Green NGOs urge renewable energy standards to be included in the ETS

Sustainability standards for bioenergy should be included in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) as they are in the Fuel Quality and Renewable Energy directives, according to a group of ten environmental NGOs including Transport & Environment.

[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]In a letter to Commissioners Hedegaard (Climate Change) and Oettinger (Energy), the coalition points out how paradoxical it is that, for instance, bioliquids used in powerplants and aviation biofuels deemed unsustainable under two directives could nevertheless still qualify for emissions reductions under the ETS. According to the green group, the only way to close this loophole is by applying sustainability standards regarding renewable energy in the ETS as well. This could be done by the end of this year, when a new regulation on the monitoring and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions for the ETS is supposed to be adopted.
