Fishing For Subsidies

In July the Commission published a regulation on “de minimis” state aid to the fisheries sector, but six NGOs say this will be used as a fuel subsidy, which in turn will generate further overfishing by making fuel cheaper and thus encouraging fishermen to fish more and longer. The six say fishing enterprises are set to receive up to €30 000 of state aid every three years.
