  • First energy & CO2 railway handbook

The first railway handbook on energy consumption and CO2 emissions from the world’s railways has been published by the International Railways Union (UIC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

It points out that transport is responsible for nearly 23% of energy-based CO2 emissions worldwide, but most of it comes from road traffic while rail is responsible for less than 1%, and highlights that railways will have to play a central role in achieving sustainable mobility because of their low-carbon performance.
