  • 20% for climate in EU budget a step closer

MEPs have supported the Commission’s intention to have 20% of the 2014-20 EU budget spent on actions to fight climate change.

The European Parliament’s budget committee voted earlier this month on what it wants to see in the seven-year budget (also known as the Multiannual Financial Framework, or MFF), and it includes support for the 20% target. It also rejects any reduction of the EU’s external aid budget, which would mean no cuts could be made that affected Europe’s international development, climate and biodiversity commitments. Even if approved by the full Parliament, this amounts to no more than a starting position to take into negotiations with ministers later this year before the 2014-20 budget is finalised.
