For the first time shipping companies will be made to pay for their pollution, as part of the EU's Fit for 55 plan.
Shipping companies will now pay for half of emissions from voyages to and from non-EU ports, and all emissions between EU ports. But there is room for improvement. Revenues from the maritime ETS need to flow back to green shipping projects and loopholes which undermine the polluter pays principle should be closed.
