Road transport – new rules on night bans for trucks

T&E position o­n proposed amendments to a directive harmonising rules o­n HGV restrictions.

The European Commission’s proposal for a directive on restrictions on heavy goods vehicles is aimed at harmonising the rules for night and weekend bans within the European Union.

Night and weekend bans for heavy goods vehicles are important measures to protect citizens and the environment along transit routes and within sensitive areas. The current proposal by the Commission, to be discussed on 5 April 2001 by the Transport Council and later by the European Parliament, does not offer sufficient protection, and neglects the interests of the truck driver
