MEPs have held a first discussion on the Commission’s plans for a life-cycle analysis of fuel production, with the rapporteur, the Dutch socialist Dorette Corbey, calling for the idea of using 2010 as a base year to be abandoned.

Corbey says using 2010 would punish those companies who are already taking action to reduce carbon emissions now. She also supports the use of social and environmental criteria, but does not say whether these should apply only to renewable fuels or also to fossil fuels.
