First global NGO specifically on shipping launched
The world’s first global coalition working specifically on the environmental, safety and human effects of shipping has been launched, with T&E as one of its founder members.
Eight NGOs have come together to form the Clean Shipping Coalition (CSC) to promote ‘policies aimed at the protection and restoration of the marine and atmospheric environment that are consistent with the safe operation of ships, sustainable development, social and economic justice, and human health’. It has launched a website, www.cleanshipping.org.
It is hoped that the new coalition will facilitate its members working more effectively within the International Maritime Organisation’s decision-making structure. Many of the founder members of the Clean Shipping Coalition have been working on shipping issues for some time within Friends of the Earth International.
