The European Commission has opened a public consultation on reducing the sulphur content of marine fuels. Interest parties have until 5 January to reply.
[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]Earlier this year the Commission president José Manuel Barroso and the environment commissioner Janez Potocnik each rejected calls from industry groups to renegotiate the sulphur limits agreed by the IMO, which will require ships to use fuel with a sulphur content of no more than 10 parts per million in certain environmental conservation areas. Responding to the Swedish Confederation of Enterprises, Barroso said he did ‘not believe it is a realistic option to call into question the agreement reached at international level’, adding that the new standards are part of EU efforts to ‘promote a greener economy and modernise our transport sector’. Potocnik called for member states and the EU to ‘live up to our commitments’.
