Having access to accurate information about a car’s CO2 emissions and its fuel and energy consumption can help consumers make more sustainable and affordable choices. Unfortunately, current rules on car labelling fail to do so and are largely outdated.
The revision of the EU's car labelling law – proposed as part of the recent EU Automotive Package – is a timely opportunity to make better use of available real world data to empower consumers. For ICEs, labels should reflect real-world CO2 emissions by using an OEM-specific ‘uplift factor’ (a regulatory multiplier calculated using OBFCM data averaged for each carmaker). For EVs, consumers should be able to see the real-world performance for range and electric consumption, as well as charging power.
