Airlines against obligatory biofuels

The comments were made in a Commission workshop last month. The airlines said they were not against the use of biofuels in aviation, and they were happy to see more member states counting use of biofuels by airlines as part of their renewable energy efforts, but they would suffer if the use of biofuels were forced on them. T&E’s aviation manager Bill Hemmings said: ‘The danger here is that, by all standards, aviation biofuels have greater emissions on a lifecycle basis than conventional fuels, so any counting of them towards renewable energy targets would be counting an emissions reduction that hasn’t happened.’
