A survey of 21 000 commuters in Sweden has shown car and public transport users suffer more everyday stress, poorer sleep, exhaustion and struggle with their health compared with those who walk or cycle.
The idea of health benefits for active commuters is nothing new, but most studies have concentrated on the long-term benefits of walking and cycling, whereas this study says the benefits are in the present. The survey also found that those who drive 30-60 minutes to work suffer worse health than those whose journeys are longer than an hour, but that may be to do with affluence or living in a more peaceful part of Sweden.
