T&E campaign secures ‘electric’ commitment from Uber

The ride-hailing service Uber has agreed to make half its rides electric within five years across seven major European cities. The decision is a victory for the #TrueCostOfUber campaign launched last autumn by eight NGOs. T&E says the next move must be for other cities in Europe to respond by establishing zero-emissions zones along with cycling and walking facilities.

Uber to electrify half its rides in Europe after T&E public appeal

Uber will provide 50% of its rides in emissions-free vehicles across seven European capitals by 2025 and will aim for 100%, it announced today after an 11-month campaign by Transport & Environment and seven NGO partners. The world’s largest mobility platform pledged to clean up its act in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, London, Madrid and Paris in response to the #TrueCostOfUber campaign, which urged it to ditch dirty vehicles and replace them with electric cars.

EVs three times better for environment when ride-hailing

Replacing a traditional ride-hailing car with an electric vehicle would deliver three times the environmental benefits and emission reductions, according to a new study. The finding comes as a new cost analysis by T&E shows that e-vehicles are cheaper to run for Uber drivers in many European cities, and Uber in Portugal says it will only take on new drivers if they have an EV.

Spanish court ruling confirms ‘clean’ gas vehicles are a myth

Spain’s highest court has ruled that gas-powered cars can be excluded from benefiting from ‘scrappage’ schemes because they are worse for the climate than diesel vehicles. The ruling comes as a new T&E report discredited claims that compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles do not pollute the air with toxic particles.

Spanish government opens €230m scrappage scheme to polluting cars

Spain’s government today said its €230 million scrappage scheme for cars could be used to buy polluting combustion engine vehicles.[1] Petrol cars and diesel cars will qualify under Programa “RENOVE 2020” even if they emit above the EU’s 2020/21 climate target of 95 grams of CO2 per km. Green group Transport & Environment (T&E) condemned the spending of public money on dirty vehicles that poison citizens and the planet and will risk pushing carmakers into paying heavy fines for missing their CO2 targets.
