The UK’s commitment to end sales of new diesel HGVs by 2040 was a landmark step, but the lack of a clear regulatory framework is now holding back investment, planning and innovation in zero-emission trucks.
Electric HGVs made up just 1.15% of UK truck sales this year, far behind leading European markets, while the promised consultation on HGV decarbonisation regulation has still not appeared despite being trailed again in the Carbon Budget and Growth Delivery Plan.
We have seen how a strong ZEV Mandate for cars and vans can work: BEVs now make up roughly a quarter of new car sales, and policy certainty has helped drive major private investment in UK manufacturing.
That is why we, alongside other leading industry, logistics and civil society voices, are urging the UK Government to launch the long-awaited consultation on HGV decarbonisation regulation before the end of this year.
The UK must stay competitive, cut freight emissions and give businesses the confidence to invest.
