Taxing aviation kerosene sold in Europe  would cut aviation emissions by 11% (16.4 million tonnes of CO2) and have no net impact on jobs or the economy as a whole while raising almost €27 billion in revenues every year, a leaked report for the European Commission shows. The reduction in carbon emissions, which cause climate breakdown, would be equivalent to removing almost almost 8 million cars from our roads. Eight airlines grew their carbon emissions faster than Ryanair on flights within Europe last year. Low-cost airlines Jet2, Wizz Air, EasyJet, Vueling and Norwegian and national carriers TAP, Finnair and Lufthansa all out-paced the Dublin-based carrier which retained its title of having the highest emissions on European routes in 2018, according to official EU data released this week.

On the day the European Parliament rubber-stamps stricter CO2 limits for new cars and vans, Transport & Environment (T&E) warns that carmakers can exploit loopholes in the regulation to push sales of fake plug-in cars over electric vehicles (EVs) with no tailpipe emissions. As the rules on crediting EV sales leave room for gaming, carmakers can supply half of all ´zero and low-emission´ cars needed to comply with stricter CO2 limits with fake ‘electric’ cars.

Transport & Environment (T&E) said the world’s first ‘direct vision’ standard – under the EU’s revised General Safety Regulation – will help avoid many road collisions by improving the design of new vehicles and not forcing drivers to rely on technology like sensors and cameras to know what’s around them.
