Australia sets carbon price

Australia has voted to set a price on carbon emissions in an effort to make the country’s industry more energy-efficient.

[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]From July, Australia’s top 500 polluters will have to pay $23 per tonne of carbon emitted, with the scheme turning into an emissions trading system in 2015. Australia is responsible for just 1.5% of total global greenhouse gas emissions, but its coal-fired electricity industry means it has the highest emissions per person in the developed world. The carbon price scheme is only for industry, and there will be no carbon price on petrol or diesel for passenger cars.
