AIR EMISSIONS FROM SHIPPING: the case for continuous monitoring

Regulations are coming on CO2, and the means to demonstrate compliance with forthcoming strict SOx and NOX requirements for ships operating in SECAs and NECAs will be needed by 2015/2016.

This workshop focussed on the feasibility of using continuous monitoring to provide ship operators and port authorities with evidence of emission levels. Manufacturers, regulators and industry experts assessed the state of technology, the likely costs, and appropriateness of this technology to future regulatory requirements. Benefits over other approaches were assessed.

Key speakers included consultants in the shipping sector and representatives from the European Commission and from the industry.
