    Any future support by the European Commission to help the car industry in their restructuring processes should be explicitly linked to progress made by carmakers towards more fuel-efficient and less carbon-emitting vehicles. This is what Greenpeace and Transport & Environment have asked in a letter to the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.

    In the letter, the two NGOs have also urged the Commission to follow the pathway opened by the US administration and set more stringent mandatory standards for car emissions at 80 gCO2/km by 2020 and 60 gCO2-km by 2025.
