Two-thirds of Europeans support the introduction of low-emissions zones (LEZ) banning polluting cars from city centres, a survey undertaken by Ipsos for environmental group Transport & Environment shows.
350,000 dirty second-hand diesel cars mainly from Germany were exported to Poland in 2017 only, shows a new briefing by green transport group Transport & Environment. The research also points out that national governments have legal tools to limit this influx and should use them to protect their citizens.
Despite the perception that public recharging is a major barrier to the mass uptake of electric vehicles (EV), public chargers are only used for about 5% of charging events, including on-street city charging, car parks and fast charging along road corridors. The data compiled in various studies to date shows that the vast majority of EV charging happens at home or work and it is a lack of choice and availability of electric cars that is the principal barrier.
Reacting to FuelsEurope's study on EURO 6 diesel cars performance, Greg Archer, clean vehicles director of Transport & Environment, said: "The oil industry’s crystal ball assumes that emissions from new cars on the road will be as low as during tests – but history suggests this is wishful thinking. The reality is that diesel emissions are so complex to control they will always be higher on the road so the study underestimates the likely future contribution of diesel vehicles. Despite this, the analysis still shows that the toxic air will still be poisoning some urban residents in 2030! Replacing dirty diesels and ultimately all vehicles with engines with zero emission alternatives, or banning them from city centres, is the only way to ensure it will be safe to breath."

Following on from its 2016 commitment, the Group PSA has published the measurement results from the test protocol established with Transport & Environment (T&E) and France Nature Environnement (FNE). This protocol has been used to measure consumption in real driving conditions for 58 PSA Group models under the supervision of the Bureau Veritas certification organisation, which has certified the accuracy and integrity of the results.
The European Commission has outlined its plans for new car and truck safety rules. Under the Commission's plans new cars would be fitted with intelligent speed assistance and emergency braking systems. For trucks, the Commission plans to introduce the world's first-ever direct vision standard to tackle truck blind spots. The new rules will be proposed as legislation in the summer of 2017 and would apply to all vehicles sold in the European Union. T&E welcomes the Commission's plans but warns that direct vision trucks must hit the road well before 2028.

Increasing the use of natural gas in cars and trucks would be largely ineffective in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution, a new independent study finds. There are no GHG savings in shifting from diesel cars and trucks to compressed or liquefied natural gas (LNG) cars and trucks, while petrol-hybrid, electric and hydrogen cars deliver much greater climate benefits, the study for sustainable transport group Transport & Environment says.
Europe can only meet the climate targets Heads of State agreed on for sectors outside the Emissions Trading System (ETS) if it sets fuel efficiency standards for new cars, vans and lorries by 2025 or earlier, a new study by Transport & Environment (T&E) reveals . In a middle-of-the-road scenario where transport would cut CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030 , the study found that CO2 standards for all vehicles (cars, vans and lorries) in 2025 and 2030 would deliver a whopping 42% of the emissions reduction required from transport.
