New technology can cut big trucks’ emissions by a third

Improved fuel efficiency could deliver emissions savings of 28% by 2050 compared to a business-as-usual scenario (see graph below). For trucks above 16 tonnes this improvement goes up to 32%. T&E has used its new European Union Transport Roadmap Model (EUTRM) tool to calculate the emissions reduction potential of fuel efficiency technologies for trucks.

What would happen without new measures to cut freight emissions?

T&E, using its new European Union Transport Roadmap Model (EUTRM) tool, has calculated how greenhouse gas emissions from land freight transport would evolve up to 2050 if no new measures are introduced to reduce its emissions, i.e. under a business-as-usual scenario. Trucks represent less than 5% of all vehicles on Europe’s roads today but are responsible for around 26% of all road transport CO2 emissions.

Governments must follow MEPs’ lead for more ambitious climate law

EU governments should answer MEPs’ call for a more robust climate law, green group Transport & Environment (T&E) has said despite the European Parliament’s vote today to weaken the environment committee's ambitious proposal for the Effort Sharing Regulation (ESR). The parliament backed a more ambitious starting point than the European Commission’s proposal, capped the so-called banking flexibility but kept the loophole on forestry credits so member states can avoid some emissions reductions.

EU proposes distanced-based road tolling to drive truck fuel efficiency

Time-based road tolling for trucks is to be phased out in Europe by 2024, the European Commission has proposed. T&E welcomed the switch to a distanced-based system which, by charging per kilometer, encourages drivers to take the most efficient route and discourages empty trips while reducing congestion and pollution.

Rail better at reducing road freight than previously thought

The ability of rail freight to reduce congestion and pollution on roads is far greater than previously thought, according to figures from one of T&E’s British member organisations. The figures suggest that integrated rail and road planning is a better option for reducing the environmental impact of road transport than expanding road capacity.

Europe embarks on a journey to zero-emission transport

Transport & Environment (T&E) welcomes European Commission’s proposal today on smart road tolls and its commitment to zero-emission mobility. The Commission also reaffirmed its commitment to set stricter CO2 standards for cars, vans and, for the first time,  trucks. These are moves in the right direction, but the real test of the EU’s intentions will be the ambition of the CO2 standards and whether it proposes a zero-emission vehicle mandate, the sustainable transport group said.
