The human cost of the EU biofuels policy – Hernán Bedoya

Environmental destruction costs human lives too. On 8 December an NGO friend phoned me up with the shocking news that Colombian community leader and land claimant Hernán Bedoya had been assassinated, reportedly by paramilitary groups. It was a tragic reminder that campaigning to stop deforestation is as much about protecting the livelihoods and homes of the communities that have been living in those habitats for centuries as it is about combating climate change and protecting endangered species.

Greetings from Planet Diesel

Last week I was in Munich for the so-called LKW-Gipfel; a summit of Europe’s truck industry executives. The Gipfel had an impressive line up. But before the CEOs of MAN, IVECO, Volvo and Scania delivered their keynotes, Matthias Wissmann, the German automotive industry’s (VDA) chief lobbyist, was given the stage.

New technology can cut big trucks’ emissions by a third

Improved fuel efficiency could deliver emissions savings of 28% by 2050 compared to a business-as-usual scenario (see graph below). For trucks above 16 tonnes this improvement goes up to 32%. T&E has used its new European Union Transport Roadmap Model (EUTRM) tool to calculate the emissions reduction potential of fuel efficiency technologies for trucks.

What would happen without new measures to cut freight emissions?

T&E, using its new European Union Transport Roadmap Model (EUTRM) tool, has calculated how greenhouse gas emissions from land freight transport would evolve up to 2050 if no new measures are introduced to reduce its emissions, i.e. under a business-as-usual scenario. Trucks represent less than 5% of all vehicles on Europe’s roads today but are responsible for around 26% of all road transport CO2 emissions.

The Macron effect… on our roads

When France goes to the polls, Europe holds its breath. France is essential to the European project and without it the EU in its current form cannot exist. And never were the stakes higher than in this election. Fortunately Macron won a resounding victory. France will not become the playground of the Russian-sponsored National Front. Europe will not fall apart.

20 years of truck CO2 progress - revisited

Last week I was in Hannover for the IAA2016, the twice-yearly truck fair. This is the place where European truckmakers exhibit their new models and score a few political points in front of the assembled press.Quite a few of my truck industry colleagues approached me and urged that I check the latest edition of Lastauto Omnibus, a truck testing magazine. Judging from their big smiles, there was an article in there that they all liked a lot.
