Which comes first: the electric vehicles or the charging points? This is the central question addressed in a new report by T&E about public infrastructure for charging up e-vehicles, which adds weight to earlier studies showing it is not a lack of charging facilities that is stopping the take-up of e-vehicles but the lack of the vehicles themselves.
Transport has taken over from power generation as the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the US – and the situation is likely to get worse as the Trump administration plans to weaken emissions standards. T&E says the policy will only damage US carmakers. Transport has been the single biggest emitter of greenhouse gases in Europe since 2016.
The European Commission has gone back on a series of commitments to reduce the environmental impacts of road vehicles. T&E says the climbdown carries the fingerprints of lobbying by the automotive industry, but will not help Europe’s car makers in the long term.
