EU Commission bids to stem the flow of greenwashing in banking with own 'green list'

In a much needed attempt to stop greenwashing, genuine mistakes and inconsistencies in the financial sector’s investment criteria, the European Commission’s expert group on sustainable finance today published a draft list of projects that can be deemed ‘green and climate proof’. The list could become the gold standard for sustainable finance, mobilising billions for the clean transport transition. The European federation of green NGOs, Transport & Environment (T&E), welcomes this attempt to guide investors willing to invest in projects in line with net zero emissions by 2050.

VW’s electric ‘offensive’ must be matched by infrastructure and green taxation

Today’s announcement by the Volkswagen Group that it plans to sell 70 electric models and make 22 million electric vehicles in the next decade is a game changer for the automotive industry, Europe’s federation of green transport NGOs has said. While the plan is not perfect it is a clear indication of the future of carmaking and governments should now put in place green taxation and charging infrastructure to aid the transition, Transport & Environment (T&E) commented.

Trump's America overtakes ‘green’ Europe in the electric car race

The US has become the second largest electric passenger car market in the world [1], selling 361,000 EVs in 2018 (a 2.1% market share) and relegating Europe to the third place with 302,000 cars (or a 2.0% market share), new analysis by Transport & Environment (T&E) shows. China continues to top the ranking with over one million EVs sold last year and an EV market share of 4%.

EU deal will see roll-out of cleaner public buses, but faster uptake of zero-emission technology is needed

Europe is set to start cleaning up its public buses in the coming decade after EU lawmakers today agreed binding targets for the procurement of zero-emission vehicles by local authorities and public companies. More than 75% of buses are publicly procured, and negotiators agreed that at least a quarter of these will have to be clean buses in 2025, and at least a third in 2030, under the revised Clean Vehicles Directive.

Boost for electric buses in legislative race against time

The European Parliament has given a boost to the take-up of electric buses, with a vote that strengthens the bus chapter of the European Commission’s Clean Vehicles Directive. But with elections to the parliament due in May, it is now a race to get the directive approved before the legislative process would have to start again. T&E has since published a report showing that total cost of ownership of e-buses is now almost at parity with diesel buses when health external costs are included.

Gas should be treated same as other fossil fuels, report shows

Powering Europe’s transport with fossil gas – widely known as ‘natural’ gas – would emit as much greenhouse gases as using petrol, diesel or conventional marine fuels, a new T&E report has found. Fossil gas cars also emit as much air pollution as petrol ones and their limited advantage over new diesels that comply with the latest emissions standards could be eliminated by the planned introduction of new Euro VII/7 standards, the research shows. Yet, by taxing gas for transport at a rates much lower than petrol and diesel, European lawmakers are incentivising the use of this fossil fuel.
