Barbara Smailagic

Fuels Policy Officer

European Union (Brussels)

Barbara joined T&E in July 2021 after working for the European Commission’s climate directorate on the 2030 Climate Target Plan and the national long-term strategies for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Before that she worked for an independent consultancy in France on ambitious climate, energy and air quality projects, in particular under the European Energy Award scheme. Currently she focuses on advocacy work towards making Europe's fuels policy more sustainable by phasing out the support to land-based biofuels and focusing on better advanced alternatives such as green hydrogen and e-fuels in aviation and shipping, as well as renewable electricity in road transport.

Originating from Croatia, Barbara first studied English and French language and literature, specialising in translation at the University of Zagreb. She then pursued a degree in sustainable development at the Institute of Political Studies in Lille, France. She speaks English, French and Italian, as well as her native Croatian. Outside the office she enjoys various sports and activities, including hiking, yoga and going to concerts.
