1990

1990

Eight NGOs decided they needed an organisation to fight for clean vehicles and transport pricing in the European Economic Community. The European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) was born.

1998

1998

T&E warns of carmakers manipulating air pollution lab tests. Some 17 years later, the Dieselgate scandal exposes industry-wide cheating of emissions tests.

1999

1999

Thanks to meetings with high level decision makers, T&E helps secure the EU Commission’s first road charging law for trucks in 1999, acknowledging in law the ‘polluter pays’ principle.

2009

2009

T&E's campaign ‘Two Beetles; sixty years apart; same fuel efficiency’ helps turn the tide in the debate for car CO2 standards. In 2009 the EU crosses the rubicon and introduces its first mandatory standards for new cars - four years after an auto industry lobbyist told T&E’s director that it wouldn’t happen because the industry “won’t allow it.”

2012

2012

After years of turning a blind eye to aviation emissions, high level stakeholders start listening  and, by 2019 politicians are heeding T&E’s advice to strengthen the aviation ETS - and even include shipping.

2019

2019

T&E works with its grassroots to tell lawmakers #NotInMyTank and to stop support for biofuels which drive deforestation and climate change. In 2019, the European Commission labels palm oil in diesel as unsustainable.

2020

2020

T&E’s membership grows to 60 organisations, and national offices are opened in Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland and the UK. The growth enhances T&E's influence - including at international bodies like the IMO, which bans ships from using high-sulphur fuel.

After 30 years of evolution, the climate and environment crises demand a revolution.
