This report examines the latest research on the impacts of shipping pollution and what political and technical changes need to take place in order to reduce the environmental impact of the sector.

Publications: Green NGOs Submission to IMO on Reducing Ship Emissions

This document calls on the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to recommend stringent limits on the emissions of NOx, SOx and PM from ships, and to include consideration of shore-side power, and presents recent information on ship emissions, their impacts and controls in support thereof. This document was produced by a coalition of environmental and public health NGOs.

Publications: Motorways of the Sea - NGO Response to the Consultation Document

Shifting freight from European roads to the sea could be a cure against congestion and the growing environmental impact of trans-European transports. But safety risks, operational pollution from ships and uncoordinated port investments endanger the potential benefits of short sea shipping. Sea Motorways pose the dual-risk of increasing negative impacts and concentrating them on these new routes.

In this response to the EU Consultation on Motorways of the Sea: Implementation through Article 12a TEN-T, European environmental NGOS joined in demanding that these new transport corridors be linked to environmental criteria.
