Summary and briefing on CE Delft 'Green power for electric cars' report by T&E, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth Europe.
February 8, 2010 | Cars | Climate Change & Energy
T&E, Friends of the Earth Europe, Greenpeace European Unit and WWF Germany jointly commissioned this study to look into how the full potential of electric cars can be realised. The study aims to analyse the potential impact of the electrification of road transport on EU power production and to develop policy recommendations to ensure that this development will lead to the growth of renewable electricity in Europe.

European vanmakers have attacked the European Commission's proposal to cut CO2 emissions and improve the fuel efficiency of light commercial vehicles (LCVs). This paper examines five of their key arguments and attempts to present a more balanced view of the issue.

This report asks the question: what role can electric cars play in the decarbonisation of transport? It is an attempt to look beyond the hype, and an attempt to bring the available scientific evidence to the attention of policymakers and the public.

This study, by Enerdata, investigates the effects of four different legislations on CO2 emissions for new cars sold in the short (2010), medium (2020) and long term (2030). Various topics are explored: the reductions in European CO2 emissions and oil consumption due to the induced energy savings and substitution of road transport technologies resulting from the proposed emission standards; the impacts of such legislation on the energy security and aggregate energy bill of the EU; and, finally, the effects on international markets.
