The Commission has launched its official consultation on biofuels, amid growing concern among policy makers that the environmental benefits are less clear cut than previously thought. Governments, businesses, NGOs and private individuals have until 4 June to make comments, after last month’s publication of a consultation document. Legislative proposals to set EU targets for increasing the use of biofuels in transport are expected later this year.

Shipping is sometimes the forgotten means of transport. There seems to be a general assumption that it is generally environment-friendly, although that may be mainly because the contribution of ships to climate change, air and marine pollution has been outside public debate for many years. But there are signs that this may be changing, which could be good news for shipping, as people are starting to wake up to the environmental damage caused by maritime transport.
Environmental organisations greeted the Commission's proposal for introducing a climate target for transport fuels, published in January, with particular warmth. In a Special Feature published with this month's T&E Bulletin find out more about the significance of the proposal and what work still needs to be done to make it work.
