Chapter 3.png
  • Tunnel competition

The Commission is taking legal action against the British and French governments for failure to allow competition through the Channel Tunnel.

[mailchimp_signup][/mailchimp_signup]The timing is interesting – the legal action relates to infringements of requirements set out in the first Railway Package, which should have been met by March 2003. But with the German rail company DB having announced it is running direct services from Germany to London next year, the failure by London and Paris to follow the rules of the Railway Package has suddenly become urgent. Rail services through the Channel Tunnel are currently provided only by Eurostar, a firm jointly owned by the British, French and Belgian national rail companies.
