    • How to tackle railway noise?

    The growing problem of railway noise has caused the Commission to consult on what action can be taken to tackle it.

    Railway noise is recognised as a barrier to rail freight development, with high levels of public concern in affected areas. Noise limits have been in place for new rail wagons since 2005, but the long lifespan of wagonS means the benefits will not become apparent for at least another decade. In its consultation, the Commission has floated the idea of making train operators pay more for using noisier wagons, but it also recognises that basing track access charges on noise levels might shift freight from rail to road.

    The consultation runs until 3 October, and comments can be submitted via an online questionnaire here.
