• Buying green

Transport ministers and MEPs have given their support to plans to make it obligatory for local authorities to consider environmental and energy performance when buying vehicles for public transport.

The move is aimed at strengthening an existing EU law that allows authorities to accept a bid that is not the cheapest but has environmental benefits. The Commission wants all buying authorities to be obliged to consider the environmental impact of vehicles. The requirement is likely to be mandatory by 2010.
