Campaigning for smarter and more sustainable transport

Our campaigns

Saying no to dirty oil

As well as improving the efficiency of vehicles, the world needs to reduce the emissions that result from the production of transport fuels. That means improving refinery efficiency, cleaning up the dirtiest sources like tar sands and coal-to-liquid and stopping wasteful gas flaring. On 23 February, EU Member State representatives are set to vote on rules for implementing the legislation. Read our briefing and also find out why eight Nobel Peace Prize winners want the EU to say no to dirty fuels.

50,000 reasons to cut sulphur

50,000 people die prematurely in Europe every year because of pollution caused by ships. On 16 February 2012 the environment committee of the European Parliament voted on a proposal to limit the sulphur content in fuels used by ships in EU waters. That vote brings us a step closer to cutting air pollution, protecting health and the environment. But the proposals still need to be agreed by ministers of environment. Read our press release on the outcome of the vote, and our briefing on the issue.

Climate policy in the air

From 1 January 2012, the world's first multi-country, legally-binding measure to reduce aviation emissions came into force when airlines were brought into the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU-ETS). But the scheme is under attack from the aviation industry and countries including China and the United States who say a global solution is needed. T&E brought together key players on 7 February for a debate on the issues. Read the highlights.

Making a noise

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), noise is second only to air pollution in the impact it has on health.  It is a major cause, not only of hearing loss, but also of heart disease, learning problems in children and sleep disturbance. Yet traffic noise could easily be halved, with existing technology, if more stringent limits were adopted.  T&E is working at the EU and global level for tighter restrictions on sources of transport noise including cars, lorries and trains.
